Audi cylinder on demand – intelligent and innovative
Even cylinder heads can be intelligent, as Audi cylinder on demand proves. Four of the TFSI engine’s eight cylinders automatically shut down in the partial-load range. This helps to lower fuel consumption and reduce emissions at the same time, without the switchover even being noticed or impairing the driving dynamics.
The electronically controlled sport differential distributes variable amounts of drive force to each wheel and ensures outstanding acceleration performance in corners and stabilises the vehicle’s response to load change. It also improves direct steering characteristics and provides more agile handling due to the lower steering effort required.
The aluminium in the Audi Space Frame (ASF) is lightweight, offers greater freedom of design for cast parts and extruded sections than steel and the components made from it are noted for their high rigidity. The ASF design permits sporty handling with reduced consumption.
