With Children’s Day around the corner, we gave two young superfans a fun-filled day out at Audi Centre Singapore with Audi Singapore’s Managing Director.
It was a dream come true for two young Audi superfans to spend the day at Audi Centre Singapore up close and personal with their favourite car brand. Zach Edwards, 8, and Ambra Casas Guirini, 7, were hosted by Audi Singapore’s Managing Director, Markus Schuster, who took time to answer their burning questions and show them the latest car models, including the new Audi RS e-tron GT.
They started off at Audi Centre Singapore's Customer Private Lounge where Markus demonstrated how Audi uses virtual reality and augmented reality when personalising cars, before moving on to go behind the wheels of their favourite Audi cars.
Who said you need to be a grown up to appreciate cars? As these two young motorheads proved, age is just a number when it comes to celebrating the love for cars.
Markus: I heard you two are big Audi fans. Why do you like cars?
Zach: I love cars because they give you the freedom and flexibility to go anywhere, anytime you want! My favourite part of car rides is listening to the radio and singing along when my favourite tunes come on — it makes the car ride enjoyable.
Ambra: I like cars because they come in so many different colours and designs. I find it exciting when I see nice cars on the road.
Zach to Markus: Have you always been a car fan? What was your dream car when you were younger?
Markus: Yes! For me it was the movies. I remember watching Herbie (the original series!) when I was your age and how the car was simply amazing doing the stunts and just looked so cool. Then there were the Top Trump cards I had on the sports cars with the performance statistics, which I still remember. Growing up, my dream car was the Lamborghini Countach. It was THE supercar of its time.
Ambra to Markus: What’s your favourite Audi car model now and why?
Markus: It has to be the Audi RS e-tron GT. It is the perfect Audi and the perfect car. It looks great. And the way it goes from 0 to 100km/h in just over 3 seconds, that’s almost twice as fast as my childhood dream car.
Zach to Markus: What’s the coolest Audi technology?
Markus: That will be “quattro” which is what Audi calls its signature all-wheel drive technology. With quattro, the power of the engine is transmitted onto all four wheels and not just two, which is the norm. If you think of the fastest land animals, they all run on four legs, not two. That’s how you get the most performance. And that’s the quattro magic.
Zach to Markus: How does Audi build and test their engines?
Markus: That’s a good question. It starts with technical development, where engineers use everything from computer simulations to actual prototyping to create a new engine design. On some engines, like the ones we have in the Audi RS models, each one gets further tested before they are installed into the cars. We have a factory that specialises in engine production. Last year, it built more than 1.6 million engines.
Markus: Aside from cars, what are your hobbies?
Zach: My hobbies are rock climbing, wakeboarding and playing car racing games at the arcade!
Ambra: I love dancing, drawing, gymnastics, playing the piano and taekwondo.
Ambra to Markus: Was working in a car company your dream job? How can people get a job at a car company?
Markus: I would say yes, it’s my dream job. The automotive industry is extremely interesting. My career in cars has certainly brought me places, from Germany to Italy, and now I’m in Singapore. If you want career advice, I’d say, pursue what you love.
There are thousands of jobs behind the cars you see on the road. Zach, you say you like racing games. Well, car companies always need test drivers. These days, there’s a need for engineers who can do the development work virtually, too. And Ambra, if you like drawing, the scope for an artist is extremely wide, whether it’s designing the cars or even the way our dealerships look!
Ambra to Markus: Do you have female colleagues too? What if a girl wants to work in a car company?
Markus: Of course! More than half the team at our office at Audi Singapore are women. Since most car companies are international, it helps to have experiences living abroad in different cultures and environments.
I believe that it’s important to gather as much work experience as possible as early as you can; like take on internships with car companies even when you are still in school. You get to find out for yourself what it’s really like. So by the time you graduate, you already have some experience, some contacts in these companies, and know what to expect.
Markus: What did you think of the Audi RS e-tron GT and the Audi TT Roadster you just saw?
Zach: I love all of them! But my favourite is the Audi TT Roadster because it is so cool! You can put down the roof and feel the wind in your hair while cruising on the road!
I liked the Audi RS e-tron GT because it’s such a stylish car. It has a really cool infotainment display screen that can change colour and a powerful sound system.
Ambra: What I liked about the Audi RS e-tron GT is that when you get in the car and look up, you can see the sky through the top glass window!
As for the Audi TT Roadster, I like that the top of the car is open and it’s so cool to open and close the top by just pushing a button. And I loved adjusting the seats with all the buttons at the side.
Markus: I hope you enjoyed your day at Audi Centre Singapore. What was your favourite part?
Zach: It really is a dream come true to be surrounded by all my favourite cars! My favourite part at Audi Centre Singapore is learning so much from you! Thank you for patiently explaining the features and functions of the car parts, what each button controlled, and even showing me how to charge the Audi e-tron.
I can confidently say that I am now an Audi expert!
Ambra: My favourite part is when we sat in the orange Audi TT Roadster and that we got to explore Audi Centre Singapore with you as our guide!
Markus: It’s been great fun for me getting to know you and showing you around. We always need fresh talents. In a couple of years, when you have finished school, maybe we can arrange for a job interview?
