Leading from the front: the Audi RS

The RS represents the sportiest and most exciting members of their respective product lines. They give their owners a perfect blend of thrilling racetrack performance and everyday usability.

To become a top-of-the-line Audi model isn’t easy and to earn the coveted RS badge each new model has to go through a relentless development and testing programme. This studies every minute detail of the design and engineering before being further perfected over numerous test drives around the world.

The RS workshops, where the first cars are assembled by hand, play an important part during the development phase. Watch “Making of RS – the documentary” to learn more about the intricate steps that go into building Audi RS perfection.

“Fine-tuning” is the magic word when it comes to the long road that is the development of a spectacular RS model. “A unique character will only evolve if we work consistently and with great precision. A lot of experience and a clear vision are the keys to creating a coherent overall concept,” says Oliver Hoffmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport. “Our customers demand the best products on the market,” he adds. “We have the best specialists and teams to meet their high expectations.”

Inspired by motorsports

The RS models are very much inspired by motorsports where high-performance technologies are required to create more extreme component shapes. The RS body is assembled on highly precise aluminum measuring fixtures known as the master jig. Laser scanners then record several million measuring points to help make adjustments to all surfaces and joints down to a tenth of a millimetre, which benefits both the aerodynamics and visual appeal of each individual RS.

As seen during its recent virtual launch in Singapore, the new Audi RS 4 Avant shows how sportiness and versatility combine in a breathtaking package with no compromise on comfort and usability. Its wider, more muscular body and expressive styling is a sign of things to come in other exciting RS models due to launch in Singapore soon, including the RS 5 Sportback, RS 6 Avant, RS Q3 and Q3 Sportback, and RS Q8. The aim remains the same – to bring the sporty DNA that every Audi carries to the fore as much as possible.
